running...

So I'm training for a 5k race on March 20th. That gives me 6 weeks and I just started 2 days ago! I haven't ran in a 5k since 2004!!! THAT is a very long time! Lots of things have happened since then, I got married, moved, had 2 kids! Life is busy and not much time to run. Well there's time, just no one to watch the kids. I have one of those double jogging strollers, but it's cold outside and who wants to push one of those things? I need to swing my arms to run, doesn't work so well to be pushing a stroller. So I'm going to run outside when Jon's home on the weekends and run on a treadmill at my in-laws house during the week. The first day I was so excited to run (hadn't run since march of 2009). I walked 2 minutes to warm up and then ran for 15 minutes. It was a slow 15 minutes. I probably did less than 1.25 miles. Not too good. But still I was proud of that for my first day after so long of not running. Then the next day I ran only 13 minutes, at a faster pace this time. I was going to do 15 minutes again but felt very very dizzy and figured I better stop before I fall and get hurt. Today, Jon is skipping out on work, so I ran outside. It's cold!!! I only ran for ten minutes. But this time it included some tiny hills, so that justifies the shorter time...haha...at least I'm trying to make it justify it. I came inside and my ears feel like they are going to explode. Not sure what that's all about. In all of my years of running in the cold, that has never happened to me. Hopefully it was just a fluke and not something that will continue to happen. So race day is 6 weeks from tomorrow and I'm excited, but nervous that I won't be any good at it. It's not like I have nothing to compare it to. I have alot to compare it too! Of course I have like 30 extra pounds on me than the last time I ran competitively. Pretty depressing huh? But we'll see how it goes. It's only been 3 days. It's bound to get better!!! I hear it's a hilly course, so if I can run it in like 28 minutes I'll be happy. That still sounds bad to me when I'm used to running a 5k in 23 minutes or less. But I can't expect that time! I have to be more realistic!

  1. Yay for you to be taking up running again! :-) I have been bad the last couple of weeks, its so hard to get up when its dark and go out in the cold! I usually try to run 4-5 days a week. I have only been running 2 miles b/c I never get up early enough to run more, during the summer I was doing about 3. I should run a race too...I've been wanting to for a couple years but it was hard finding one that wasn't on a Sunday morning so I gave up...I should look again and start upping the mileage! I'd be happy with a 28, I've been slower this year than last year...not good...haha. Anyway, I hope your ears don't explode next time you run outside! Wear a headwrap to keep them warm! Maybe thats why they hurt!

  2. yay for doing a 5k! I want to do one...I'll have to look into races here! Did I ever tell you I did a 15k last fall? I had never run that far before but it was really fun!
I agree with Val, I would be happy with a 28 too! I never did run very fast, lol.

  3. Ash, I ran a 5k Nov. 21, and my time was somewhere around 31 min!!! Granted, I was morning sick and pregnant so I had my pockets stuff full of crackers, and tissues (I had a cold, too)... It was pretty cool, though. I pushed Yana in a jogging stroller (there were actually about 4 or 5 of us with jogging strollers), and I ran a race JUST FOR FUN for the first time in my life. ;-)

Maybe run this one with the stroller, then everyone will be like, Wow, check out that mom running with all those kids! You'll feel like super woman, and really, it probably won't slow you down too much unless the weather's snowy. With the jogging stroller I borrow, it works to just pust it with one hand, so you can still let the other swing. ;-)
